New airport & flight security rules from TSA 12/27

Due to the attempted terror attack on Flight 253 to Michigan Christmas day 2009, the Travel Safety Administration has issued a statement regarding new security measures for domestic and international travel. Passengers on domestic flights may do best to arrive even earlier for flights so that they can be ready for any additional security efforts implemented at their particular airports.

Among the changes, TSA has reported that explosive detection canine teams, law enforcement officers, gate screening, behavior detection and other measures both seen and unseen will be implemented. They also note that passengers should not expect to see the same thing at every airport.

International flights will be where most of the emphasis is placed. There will be increased gate screening including pat-downs and bag searches. Also during these flights, passengers will be asked to follow flight crew instructions, such as stowing away their personal items, turning off electronics equipment and staying in their seats during certain portions of the flight.

There is also a new carry-on rule which will apply to international flights, where passengers can carry a standard-sized bag along with another bag such as a purse or laptop case. Carry-on rules for domestic flights will remain the same.

Delta to Offer New WiFi Service for Passengers

Soon you'll be free to surf the friendly skies..at a cost. Within the past week it was announced that Delta Airlines will begin offering WiFi internet service on a limited number of its flights. According to The Washington Post, the service will be offered on half of the airline's shuttle flights between Washington's Reagan National, New York's LaGuardia and Boston's Logan airports. The service will let any passengers with WiFi-enabled devices including laptops, smartphones and PDA's to access the internet.

As of March 2009, Shuttle America will be taking over the shuttle flights flying the Washington to New York route. Shuttle America's flights don't currently offer internet access. By March 2009 though, Delta's other flights out of Washington will offer WiFi.

The Wi Fi service is going to be free through the end of 2008 on Delta's shuttle flights, and then begin to cost passengers in 2009. The charges for accessing the Wi Fi Internet service on Delta's flights will run $9.95 for flights less than 3 hours and $12.95 for flights longer than 3 hours.

Best Business Airline in North America 2008

In a 2008 Best in Business Travel Survey conducted by Business Traveler magazine, Continental Airlines was chosen as the #1 airline for North American Travel. Continental received its awards yesterday in Los Angeles, which also included "Best Flight Attendants in North America".

According to marketwatch.com, Continental's president of marketing explains why the airline is a favorite amongst business travelers:

"Continental's employees consistently deliver a world-class product and industry leading service," said Jim Compton, Continental's executive vice president of marketing. "With one of the youngest fleets in the industry, we continue to take delivery of new aircraft and invest in our product to improve passenger comfort, including upgrading existing aircraft with in-seat power, video on demand and Wi-Fi, and introducing a new lie-flat seat in our BusinessFirst cabin."

The United Kingdom's version of these awards had a different result for 2008, as UK readers chose American Airlines as the top airline for North America, and Singapore Airlines as its Best Airline. Other awards included Best Frequent Flyer Programme, Best Business Hotel, Best Luxury Hotel Chain and Best Car Rental.

O'Hare, Seattle-Tacoma, Dulles Airports Open New Runways

As of today, three brand new runways are opening up at 3 major airports around the US. The airports getting new runways are Washington Dulles International Airport, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

According to CNN.com the news is welcomed by the aviation community who has faced a year of bad news in the travel industry. This is the fourth runway for Dulles, its first added since the airport opened in 1962. Seattle-Tacoma's runway will be helpful due to the often wet climate there. The new runway allows planes to take off and land two abreast during bad weather, cutting delay times down. As for Chicago O'Hare, their runway is part of a huge multi-billion dollar program which when done in 2014 will make for a safer & more efficient airport configuration.

"It is going to make a difference," Peters said. "It is going to allow us to conduct more operations, meaning more takeoffs and landings per hour at these airports and will help move passengers efficiently through.

"That, we hope, will give travelers a good experience this holiday season," she said.

President Bush, this week, touted the arrival of the three new runways, noting that 14 new runways will have opened during his administration.

While some airport officials and travel analysts joke that delays will never be eliminated completely, Atlanta's Hartfield airport makes a case for adding runways. In 2006 they unveiled a new runway and have increased flights by 25 to 30 per hour, saving the airlines about $10 million a week in fuel costs. It will remain to be seen if airlines begin offering any dirt cheap airline tickets now, but it definitely could takeoff in the right direction for travelers.

American Airlines Adds $15 Luggage Fee

According to news reports Wednesday, passengers will now be charged $15 to check their first piece of luggage with American Airlines. The company cites the rising cost of gasoline as the reasons for its recent business moves. Here's more on the recent news that the airline is cutting jobs, reducing its domestic flights, and charging for checked luggage.

Gerard Arpey, chairman and CEO of American and parent AMR Corp., said the industry is in a "very perilous" period, agreeing with the assessment given last week by retiring Southwest Airlines chairman Herb Kelleher.

"The U.S. airline industry as it is constituted today was not built for $125- or $130-per-barrel oil," Mr. Arpey said after the AMR annual shareholders meeting in Fort Worth.

"The industry will not and cannot continue in its current state," he said. "The fact that four more airlines have liquidated this year and one is operating in Chapter 11 is clear evidence of that fact.

"So we are moving to construct a business plan that, to the extent possible, is constructed for the current reality of slow economic growth and high oil prices," Mr. Arpey said.

So if you're planning a trip and want to save on the $15 fee, consider a different airline, or do your best to travel with less suitcases!

Skybus Airlines Officially Shut Down

Here's some important information if you had made airfare travel arrangements via Skybus airlines for any date after April 4th, 2008.

The Skybus wesite (www.skybus.com) has the following announcement that the company has had to shut down operations due to economic struggles:

Skybus Airlines will cease all operations effective Saturday, April 5.
Skybus struggled to overcome the combination of rising jet fuel costs and a slowing economic environment. These two issues proved to be insurmountable for a new carrier.

We deeply regret the impact this decision will have on our employees and their families, customers, vendors, suppliers, airport officials and others in the cities in which we have operated. Our financial condition is such that our Board of Directors felt it had no choice but to cease operations.

Passengers holding reservations for Skybus flights scheduled to depart on or after Saturday, April 5, 2008 should contact their credit card companies to arrange to apply for a refund. More information for customers and others will be made available on the Skybus web site (www.skybus.com) as it becomes available.

All flights for Friday, April 4 will be completed. Passengers holding reservations on flights for Friday, April 4 should check in for their flight at a Skybus kiosk at the airport instead of the Skybus website.

This is unfortunate news as Skybus offered some very dirt cheap airline tickets as low as $10 a seat for early birds.
